Located along the hippo bend lagoon of the Mara River, in the vast 70,000-acre Mara North Conservancy, Royal Mara Safari Lodge carefully blends the luxurious safari amenities with the wild and enchanting wilderness.
With breathtaking views of the river and the natural forested ridge, this boutique tented lodge offers privacy and exclusivity in the wild. Our river-facing tents offer magnificent views making game viewing at Royal Mara an activity in and of itself.
Combine this with exceptional game viewing in the wildlife-rich Mara North Conservancy. As you enjoy the off-road driving only possible in conservancies, our knowledgeable guides will tell you about the lion prides, the cheetah cubs and the elusive leopard and bring you up close to the big five. This unforgettable safari experience will be heightened when you sit at the fireplace with our Maasai guides and listen to the tales passed down from generation to generation.
Royal Mara Safari Lodge is a few miles drive from the world-famous migration river crossing points of ‘Koiyaki Kichwa Tembo” and “Mara Serena’ as well as the leopard hangout at ‘Leopard Gorge’, highlighted on the BBC Big Cat Diary Program. We are located on the migration route where during the migration season of June to November, thousands of wildebeest converge on the camp periphery to graze.
From January to April, when the grasses in the Maasai Mara National Reserve are at their tallest, most herbivores and lions within the reserve migrate up to the Royal Mara area due to the shorter grasses, making game drives near us the preference for most camps.
Getting to The Royal Mara
By Air
There are twice daily flights between Wilson Airport in Nairobi and the Masai Mara. The preferred airstrip for guests travelling to the Royal Mara is the Mara North airstrip, which is a 10 minute drive from camp. Private charters are also available, but are generally more expensive. Flights are also available between other Kenyan safari and beach destinations.
By Road
The Royal Mara can also be reached by road via the town of Narok. The journey from Nairobi takes over 6 hours. The route is scenic but the road can be bumpy and sections of it are gravel. It is for this reason that it is recommended that guests fly in to the camp.
Our Story
Our story began almost twenty years ago while our founder was still in the United States of America. One day as he sat with his family in front of the television, George watched an episode of the famous BBC’s Big Cat Diaries. The show highlighted the marvels of the Maasai Mara and followed the iconic wildlife in their natural habitat.
Among the wildlife featured on the show was Zawadi, a female leopard. Captivated by her elegance, George packed his bags and set off in search of one of the most elusive cats. This was his first visit to the magical plains of the Maasai Mara in Kenya. After spending a few days on the trail of Zawadi and on the wild plains with the Marsh Pride lions, George knew he had found what he desired. He wanted to be in the wild, to be a part of the wild. His desire was so strong that he decided to stay.
Later, George found a beautiful location along the Mara River and set camp. The hippos dipping in and out of the river and the canopy of trees standing tall have been the home of the Royal Mara Safari Lodge since its inception.
After almost two decades in the beautiful plains of Maasai Mara, our love for the savannah is unwavering and our desire to be here is relentless. We are more passionate about offering luxury safaris as we create a lasting impact in the region. We offer you an opportunity to immerse yourself deep into the Maasai Mara. You will enjoy unmatched safari experiences, and cultural interactions while contributing to and transforming the lives of the local Maasai community.
